Mexicali: The City I Hardly Knew

I apologize for the lack of blogging last week; I was down in the Southwest and Mexico. It was much warmer down there than it has been in the north.

This is a picture of us crossing the border into Mexico through Calexico. The line that awaited us coming back into the America was like none I had ever seen. I can definitely attest to the fact that recent anti-Immigration forces have forced border workers to take a bit more time in clearing individuals to come across. My two friends, who were traveling with me into Mexico from our hometown of Brawley, explained that just 35 years ago, their parents simply walked up to the boarder and were granted the ability to work temporarily in the States. How things have changed.

If you ever get a chance to see Mexicali, you should jump at it. I am surprised how huge and cosmopolitan it is having lived so close to it for so many years. I grew up in a small farming town, but just across the border is a massive foreign city. Why I didn’t take advantage of it in my youth is beyond me.

Heck, they have a Star Wars fan club! If only I would have known in my teens that there was a world of nerds just across the border.
