Tom Waits makes me want to be an old man who drank too many bourbons and smoked too many cigarettes.
Oddly enough, my aunt was a friend of Tom’s when she worked at a bakery in Freestone, CA where Tom and my aunt own homes. She said she was often surprised by how beautiful his children were, seeing how he was “not such a looker” (her words, not mine).

He who swings a mighty hammer,
He who reaps a field of corn,
He who breaks the marshy meadow
To provide for wife, for children,
He who rows against the current,
He who weary at the loom
Weaves with wool and tow and flax
That his fair-haired young may flourish.
Honour that man, praise the worker!
Honour every callous hand!
Honour every drop of sweat
That is shed in mill and foundry!
Honour every dripping forehead
At the plough. And let that man
Who with mind and spirit's labour
Hungering ploughs be not forgotten.

Yep, idiots in Berkeley are still spending their energy fighting to save a couple trees on the UC Berkeley campus from being cut down. Sure, the school's plan's entail that more trees will be present on campus after this building project is complete than there are now. Sure, all of these trees were planted when the university was first built and are in no way “old growth”. That isn’t going to stop a bunch of brainless “do gooders” from making an issue out of absolutely nothing. Just another reason Berkeley is one of the most conservative cities in the country.
